Measuring Butter or Shortening: Did You Know?

4 Jul

Did you know that there is an easier way to measure vegan buttery spread or shortening without having to pack it into a little measuring cup, then scrape it out?

Measuring Shortening - Step 1

Step 1

All you need is a glass measuring cup (used for measuring liquids), cold water (keeps the ingredient you are measuring from melting), and whatever you are looking to measure (let’s say shortening).

For example, if you need 1/2 cup shortening, do the following:

  1. Using cold water, fill your glass measuring cup up to the 1 cup mark.
  2. Spoon shortening into the measuring cup until the water line reaches the 1-1/2 cups mark.
Measuring Shortening - Step 2

Step 2

In other words, you begin with 1 cup water and add 1/2 cup shortening, which equals 1-1/2 cups total (hence where the water line falls). Easy, huh?

This also works for margarine and even peanut butter. Reason being that vegan buttery spread, margarine, peanut butter and shortening are all oil-based, and oil and water don’t mix.

Before adding the ingredient (again, let’s say shortening) to your recipe, make sure you let as much water drip off as possible!
